Getting a better ‘high’ when you shop, An Interview with a Budtender

Episode 2 Sunday supper you have to admit living in the legal cannabis state is an awesome luxury here in these Rocky Mountains. We are spoiled at the beginning of 2020 the Colorado marijuana enforcement division listed 572 recreational retail stores and 408 licensed medical marijuana stores. Unification and legally purchase cannabis in its many presentations kind of like going to the liquor store.

Right?

WRONG!

I know I set you up, but the experience I have at the liquor store is completely transactional. I know what I want I go get it I pay for it and I’m gone. I don’t ask the stock clerk which box of wine goes with salmon. I already know the answer red because that’s all I drink red for fish red for tacos.

Red for Red’s sake. White wine gives me a headache. So I walk in with some information that informs my purchase 99% of my liquor purchases. I am totally okay with the high level of Detachment from the staff.

However, if I’m cooking with white wine, I do have to ask the wine guy because I can never remember which is drier: Chardonnay or Chablis. My butcher shop, veggie stand and my dispensary Were all selected on a similar set of criteria including quality level and cleanliness and that’s in product and environment. But the thing that brings me back is the relationship I have with the people inside and this in our second episode.

Roasted, Baked and Glazed is where I want to pick back up on the conversation I had an episode 1 on community. I sat down over dinner with my friend and budtender Mack over a giant bowl of saffron-infused tagliatelle pasta with spiced butter.

I used Golden Goat with its uplifting terpene profile to elevate the spice this spice forward butter, so good with a combination of Ginger sweet paprika coriander cinnamon cayenne and a little spring spring of red pepper flakes…the butter with of the herbaceous cannabis taste if you really care about that kind of thing.

This dish is beautiful to serve and easy to infuse many of the spices you probably already have on hand. This is going to be a short but important episode on the customer experience and how everyone has a shared responsibility in the success of that relationship.

My relationship with Mack was able to develop because of who she is as a budtender after telling her what experience I want. I was looking for she was able to steer me in the right direction. She was right. I was happy and I when I went back I asked for her now. I know her schedule and plan my purchases around that.

All right, welcome to roasted baked and glazed episode to Sunday supper. I am here with Mack one of my almost a one of the only actual budtender I like I mean, I’ve been through a lot. I’ve been through a lot and I can say Mack. You are my favorite. I really extra. Yeah, I know that really, you know plugs into what we’re going to be talking about.

My customer experience and so Mack, the customer experience.

I know what should happen, but it doesn’t always happen. Where do you think the industry went wrong?

In hiring and educating Budtenders giving them goals.

Yeah, I think it has to do with individual stores individual people as well. Yeah, because the kind of product you sell the kind of morals or Integrity that you actually have behind your business is kind of what you attract with your employees.

And knowledge all over the board just you know ranging from just knowing what THC is to knowing how to do your own infusion exactly.

The Cannabis industry also kind of works like dog years. So the longer you’re in the business the more you learn about it as well. So any place can just hire someone who’s capable of using register capable of you know, being nice to customers, but it kind of takes a personal want to actually be able to educate them versus just sell.

Yeah, because the more you learn about the customer the more you can understand what they’re actually looking for.

Yes and most of the time some of the time they don’t even know what they’re looking for. So it I think it comes down to the individual and the business you’re working for do they care about what’s going into the product. Do you care what’s going into the product?

You there to sell or you there to help and that can be just based off of individual, you know shops. Exactly did you oh, so we were talking about customer experience and I’ve had again various experiences where I feel but for the most part I feel like a lot of them had been completely transactional; right, you come in, you point.

They feel good by right and I can say I mean that that has been the least satisfying experience. I have more joy going to the grocery store, right? And because I know I can release.

Interact with somebody who’s of like mine. We both want some food, you know, and hey if we’re in the same aisle looking at kind of the same thing, maybe we can help one another or at least come up with some strange antidote that will make each other’s day. It’s a beautiful thing but going into a dispensary a place where you’re supposed to be of, you know, joy and possible healing transaction, right? I might as well be pumping gas, right so it’s just so…I build no loyalty and I think, well, was it mostly because it was a younger, you know, Budtenders of course, I’m past my yeah V about to be 55 years old.

What do we have to talk about? What it what you know, did it did it? There’s nothing there. I think even even to even make it up like but sometimes it’s just hey, how’s your day going? Hey, you know and it’s a real basic stuff that gets missed and in that, you know transcends any generational, you know, Kat, you know chasms absolutely So and I’ve had some that

Were like how did you get this job? Because you know the stereotype for Stoners or just stupid that that cannabis industry draws all types of cannabis lovers and some of them unfortunately do just care about getting a discount or being able to work with weed unless about

Actually knowing what they’re talking about her continuing.

sneeze a lot of that can be like, you know your neighborhood market or it could just be your quick trip that you just need to get through and yeah, I think good Budtenders can tell if you want just a transaction if you’re just coming in, but they have to still have to be open to, you know, people who don’t necessarily shop all the time or you know people who are used to meeting someone at a parking lot or being you know, that’s never happened. Right? Exactly any legal State, you know, it’s I mean a million different type of demographics. Yes.

Yes, it’s not just like one type of person who smokes pot. Right and if the budtender, you know doesn’t really care about interacting with people or necessarily finding what they’re looking for. It can really just be I’m just here to sell you something like come in and go. Yeah, which is super unfortunate. Yeah, because half the people are tourists, you know, some people don’t know how much they shoot.

You know where they should take it or like, you know, even things like that.

Asking questions to your customers best way to know what they’re looking to experience. I feel like some of the larger dispensaries should really just be tourists. Yes, you know, like go into the aquarium. Yeah, because I’ve been to them and I can tell you I hate every last one of them. I went to that’s just like what is this? I didn’t.

And it was one I think we had to be queued up in some weird way. I’m like are we gonna get on a ride? Yeah. What’s I really I hated that experience and I think there was some things that kind of struck me personally because I had worked in a prison and so anything with these weird cute lines is weird to me. Yeah, absolutely. And that’s what I felt like my guys felt like that being heard. Yeah.

And I’m like, I can’t do that again. No. Yeah. Absolutely. I felt like I was paying some extra price for wanting to shop there and it’s like I see like 300 people a day. Hmm and it’s I think the discomfort of dispensaries being the only retail place that like people can actually tell you know, hmm, you know, like no you can’t go

Over there, you know, you have to be certain age. You have to have a certain ID. No, you can’t talk on the phone, you know things like that can make the experience almost like cold because you do have to hand your ID, you know, you are kind of giving up, you know, I mean, I’m not taking your identity or anything, but you know, I hold your ID and you don’t have to do that anywhere else. Other than maybe I will Store, which has been normalized right forever and you give your debit card to the waiter who in great and just walk off right and you’re totally fine with that totally fine with that. So I the piracy that people kind of like real these days is really going to like, you know, but but yeah, I just I have been in those dispensaries with those type of people and you’re just kind of like, can you get your head out of your own ass just for a minute? I don’t know. Why are you even here? Yeah.

Know how some people have ever first off made it this far without someone else. I’d absolutely yeah, but it’s like people have never been in public before and I don’t know if it’s because the entitlement of just going into a store just assuming they’re working for you.

Not transactional in the fact that you’re I’m just reading this up for you. I’m trying to help you find something right and help you curate your own experience, right? Absolutely.

I mean, I’ve never seen people just act so

Ridiculous like I drove Lyft. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah and maybe most of the people are intoxicated when they come in and they’re you know, one-track mind there. Hi there like, you know, really just trying to find something but it’s astonishing the amount of entitlement that I see covers doors. I you know what?

100% I believe you 100% And I’m always astounded by it. I really am like it. I think never heard that before maybe it’s like a lot of Colorado residents. But like it’s a lot of Tourism to just like I’m selling you legal weed. I am legally allowed to do this. I would bend over backwards to be able to do this you’re coming from

I need legal state. If I need to see your ID a hundred times. It should be okay. You’re not going to be arrested for this. You’re not going to be thrown in jail, or you’re not gonna have your life ruined, you know, the amount of things that people take for granted the fact that they are going into a dispensary and they’re buying cannabis. I think they completely forget that they just think they’re at another

Place to serve I have feel like okay. I want to be a good customer. I really do and you know people have ritual around cannabis to absolutely so are you able to if somebody lets you work with their ritual and you know, it has that ever gotten that deep in a conversation a good interaction that you’ve had with.

A customer. I think there’s certain customers that have like very similar like effects that I do with with certainly so we can Bond over maybe like specifically, you know how that will make us feel. Yes, Illinois was the very first state when legalizing to put part of their tax money aside for prison reform. Yeah, Colorado has finally kind of gone on board with it releasing people for nonviolent. Yeah, drugs, you know returning there, you know.

Things clear. Yeah, they’re even like the prisoner project is even working with people who have felonies to go directly into the Cannabis industry because they clearly already know something about it and there’s no reason anyone should be sitting in prison right now for something that I can sell legally right that I get taxed for. I will tell you right now, I would of all my clients that I had I read from them. Yes, I would absolutely buy weed from one of my clients. Yeah, my old clients. Yeah, because I know they know what they’re talking about. Absolutely and one of my it was just one of those moments and I mean this was no Michelle Pfeiffer, you know, kind of you know that horrible movie thing, but but when my clients one day and that’s what he was in for and he’s like Miss Carolyn. I don’t know how to do math. I was like,

I think you do. I think you do. He wasn’t no no, I don’t believe so. Yeah anything was and if I smoke it was very rarely, right? So it was in somebody just happen to have a joint. So I had no idea what the street value was. So I said, okay. Well how much?

Is you know I said well, how much well, how do you sell them? He goes, you know, he broke that down I said well, how much is this is it is okay and we went through this whole thing and he gave me the correct total at the end and I was just like you just did mad. Yeah. It was yeah I said I know and never want you to say that again that is out of your life your vocabulary take that out because I need you to move that. Yeah, and because I think he really thought he was it’s done, right and

But a lot of those guys are brilliant really have been told so way that they understand absolutely we still have customers ask how many eight certain ounce not doing it. What do I know so but yeah, I want it. So tell me kind of I want to you know wrap this up on a really positive note. I want I want to be I want to be teacher’s pet a student good customer. Okay, I do and

and I will tell you that I don’t order online because I don’t get all the information I want so I have to go in. So every time I go in I don’t know what I want. So Justin, but I can tell you what experience I want. So tell me what are kind of the some of the things that our listeners can keep in mind and be that A+ student good customer help us to out. Help me help.

Yeah, I think number one. It’s really just listening to your butt under mmm. I think a lot of people get caught up in words, like specifically sativa and indica. Yes, if I’m describing something as uplifting and cerebral or energetic. Let’s just assume it’s a sativa. Mmm, but if I don’t say that word some people will just shut Flatline. Yeah, right. And so I think more about what the like the Budtenders actually telling you then like that catch phrase or something that you came in thinking about. Okay?

that’s that’s like a berry big one that you know people come in and assume they know even when they don’t know babies clearly just they even though they don’t know right but like just absorbing what Satchel but Sanders telling you yes.

Open mind, I think a lot of times, you know, we’ll have people who come in never consumed before and think that they should even edible and I’m like, well, you’ve never been high before you definitely don’t want to be stoned two hours later and not know if you’re going to like it or not, you know smoking can be kind of, you know a taboo because it’s associated with you know, cigarettes or anything like that.

Like inhaling but you might want to try out smoking pot before you even edible because it’s a completely different high. Absolutely. It’s also much easier to come down from smoking and then it is from edible because you’re kind of stuck there. So, you know keeping an open mind. It’s definitely, you know, we don’t want you to freak out. We don’t want you to have a horrible experience.

So if you know your budtender saying maybe you should just eat one your friend might eat for yes. You should probably just eat one. Mmm.

Yeah. Yeah, it’s really just paying attention to what they’re saying. Hopefully they’re asking you just as many questions so they can understand more about what you’re looking for. And then just overall patience and kindness has really appreciate it both of little things. Right like we were just talking about with you know, all the people who are stuck in prison and for something that I’m selling right now and the people who come in just so

Hell-bent on you know, you don’t have this you don’t have this. You don’t have this. Hmm. It’s like you should be really thankful and grateful that we actually have this opportunity and I think people just forget that. Yeah, and it just becomes like a shocking run where it’s definitely more of an experience building the news.

Just because you want high THC doesn’t mean it’s gonna you know, make you really racy if it’s going to make you fall asleep. So I know like some people were really stuck on that. Just listen to your budtender maybe they have another way of finding what you’re looking for. Then just teach see percentage Yeah.

Also, my favorite is you know people who have been smoking longer than I have been alive, but with anything things change things grow, we learn different ways to do things and learn better ways to do things. So even though you were probably growing when you’re 25, things are different now one of the quotes you say is you say science.

Changes. Yeah, and I was like, I wrote that down and I just thought yeah science does change. I mean it’s it’s truth until we prove that it’s not exactly well. We used to think that we revolved around, you know everything and that’s like almost the most ridiculous thing to think now, so just because you were growing something in the 70s and I teach see percentage, you know.

It’s very different now. Yeah.

And you know canvas like dog years like just you know new ways to consume new ways to feel it. Enjoy it. I mean, it’s almost ever-changing. Yeah, and so just to be stuck in. Well, I only smoke into cuz this percentage that’s so limiting. Your body did isn’t even regulated though. It is not even wow.

I know it’s pretty hilarious. I’ve heard people say stuff like that is just like right and I used to definitely be someone that was like, oh, I won’t smoke sativas because it makes me anxious. Hmm But now that I actually understand how your body processes. Yes it you know, like cannabis when you’re digesting it through your stomach.

You aren’t getting the kind of terpenes and that effect you’re getting high, but it’s not going to be that differentiation of you know, lemony versus a pioneering or you know.

You know Stone here stringing or something like that. Just based off of how your stomach digest things also situational, you know, people forget that people think that you had a bad party just had a bad party. Yeah, you might have if you’re probably already wanting to take a nap. So yeah, exactly so it’s very situational.

Recipe:

Saffron Tagliatelle with Spice Butter

Recipe author: Yotem Ottolenghi, Jerusalem

Serves 4

2 tsp saffron threads

4 tbsp boiling water

Spiced Butter

1 cup (2 sticks) butter

4 tbsp olive oil

8 shallots, finely chopped

1tsp ground ginger

1 tsp sweet paprika

1tsp ground coriander

1 tsp cinnamon

1 tsp cayenne pepper

1 tsp chili flakes

½ tsp ground turmeric

1 tsp salt

Black pepper

2/3 cup pine nuts, toasted and roughly chopped

4 tbsp roughly chopped mint

4 tbsp roughly chopped parsley

Directions

Place the saffron threads in a small bowl with the boiling water. Set aside to infuse.

Bring a large pot of salted water to boil.

To make thee spiced butter:

Place the butter and the oil in frying pan and cook the shallots for about 10 mintes, or until they soften and the butter turns slightly brown. Now add all the spices. Salt and some pepper. Remove from heat and keep warm.

Cook the tagliatelle for 2-3 minutes, or until al dente. Drain and return to the pot. Pour the spiced butter over the pasta and stir well. Divide amoung four plates. Sprinkle with the pine nuts and chopped herbs and serve.
